Hi all. I have suddenly developed a rather large bruise on my calf for no apparent reason. It's around 5 inches by 3 inches and quite irregular in shape. I honestly can't remember knocking it. I wonder if it's related to the RA or to my drugs, Mtx and Plaquenil. I'm going to phone the GP tomorrow, but to be honest you lot often know more or at least are more familiar with all the things that we put up with whereas GPs are often inexperienced. I have a very precious holiday coming up and I don't want anything to hinder it. Any ideas on what causes this type of bruising anyone?

Hi Naomi
That's a whopping bruise!!! R.A does make you more prone to easy bruising and it could be due to the medications you are taking. Have you had any steroid because that makes the skin thinner and susceptible to bruising? My advice would be to have it checked out with the doctor just to make sure there is nothing else going on. Lack of iron and vitamin c also makes the skin bruise really easily too.
I bruise really easily without knowing how, but the bruises are usually quite small. I think it's best to have a chat with your GP just to rule out DVT, I always believe if you are worried about something check it out as soon as possible.
Best of luck Naomi
Love Rebecca x

Hi Naomi Let us know how you get on, that is worrying. Have u checked out side effects from meds - bruising for example. With leth'mide meds I've got lots of really small bruises started on legs, now arms. I checked out the leth'mide side effects - said bruising and headaches on constant upset tummy report to rheumy. Rung rheumy helpline to let them know, they said take every other day until my appointment in over 2 weeks with them. I hope you get to the bottom of this, try not to worry Naomi - big hugs. Jane Xxx

Hi Naomi - you're right to ask the GP, but it could easily be nothing. I've got a bruise of a similar size on my leg and it's been there for about 4 months now. I've asked various docs and physio and they say it's one of those things that take up to a year to go away. In my case I know what caused it - and it was due to the fluid in my knee rupturing and filling up my calf (this was in the bad old days when my RA was rampant!). The fluid has long since cleared and the swelling has gone but the bruise remains just to annoy me! I have noticed like the others said that I bruise very easily and they take longer to disappear. But ask yiur GP to check you out for DVT (they did in my case - but that's a whole different story!!!!) just to put your mind at rest. Sylvia xx Be kinder than is necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

I bruise easily and they are quite big too. I have had various checks at haematology and all is clear. I do have a bruise that never went away, its been there since 2008!! I had a bad fall, a v ery heavy one whilst at a memorial service, the ground was very wet and I slipped on a step and went down heavily on that leg. The initial bruise was from bottom of leg right up to the knee. I hadn't been diagnosed at that time, but did have the usual signs. I was told that it was because not all the blood was reabsorbed after the fall so it's left a very fetching stain........ BARBARA

I too have lots of bruises its down to blood palettes. I have constant big bruises on my leg and large staining from a bad fall. Its so annoying especially during summer when I want to wear lovely summer dresses. It doesn't take much to get these bruises some I feel at the time others I don't.

I've been on holiday to Taiwan, hence the late reply. The bruise was nothing to worry about according to the GP, and it's now disappeared. I know my platelets were bordering on low at the last blood test so I'll feel reassured to get my bloods tested on Monday to check all is OK.
